Our big family vacation this summer was to Custer, South Dakota! We rented a couple of State Park cabins, and we spent the week with our Christensen family. It was a LONG 14 hour drive to get there--and our van was packed down, but we made it before nightfall!
We stopped at a sketchy rest stop, and while we waited for our boys to come out the bathroom, Harper made this rock collection!
Lunch at a rest stop in Wyoming!
We got there, picked up some quick Dairy Queen for dinner, and drove into the park to make beds before bed time! It was a little rainy that first night. We were on our way to a nature program, when it was cancelled because of rain! We helped Grandma and Grandpa drive in a get their camper parked.
Everyone had been working hard to earn money for our vacation, and their money was burning a hole in their pockets! After a quick breakfast the next morning, everyone wanted to walk to the General Store to see all the things they could buy!
Everyone quickly wanted a pocket knife, and they wanted to carve sticks most of the time we were there! Uncle Tom was really good to train our kids about the "blood barrier". Each kid had to create an invisible circle around themselves before they started carving (to eliminate the chance of them hurting someone else while carving!).
We went to a visitor's center and watched a welcome video! The kids had a fun time seeing how many of us weighed the same amount as a bison! It took almost all of us standing on a scale!
We went and listened to a presentation about the bison roundup they do every year at Custer State Park! We tried dodging some really big puddles of...poop...and mud, but we still had some dirty shoes when we left!
On the way back to our campsite, we saw there was a burro feeding area! I stayed in the car with the one kid who did not want to get out, and Scott ran to see the burros with the rest of the kids! They really could walk right up to them!
On the way back to our camp, we had a crazy hail storm in June! (We learned later that there were 13 tornadoes that touched down on the eastern side of the state, and that's why our weather was so weird! Luckily, we were on the western side of the state!
We came back to tons on hail, and our dining tent was completely ruined! It snapped the metal frame!
S'mores after dinner!
